Medical Gas Alarm System Upgrade
Project Overview
CG Medical NSW Pty Ltd was engaged to upgrade and integrate the Medical Gas Alarm Systems across three Medical Centres within the Clarence Correctional Centre. The objective was to ensure full compliance with AS2896-2021 Medical Gas Pipeline Systems, improve real-time alarm visibility, and modernise the manifold hardware and signalling infrastructure.
The works were performed by licensed medical gasfitters Clint Glasgow and Robert Glasgow, delivered in three controlled stages to maintain operational continuity within a high-security environment.
Project Scope
- Installation of new alarm cabling through ceiling cavities and penetrations
- Replacement of manifold arms, content gauges and pressure switches
- Integration with the existing ASCON Master Alarm Panel
- Programming and verification of alarm behaviours
- Commissioning in accordance with AS2896-2021 Clause 8.2

Three Stage Delivery
Stage 1 — Alarm Cabling Installation
Clause 7.4- Ran new alarm cable from the ASCON Master Alarm Panel to each Oxygen and Medical Air manifolds
- Installed and protected all cabling using medium-duty UV-rated conduit
- Ensured correct segregation from electrical infrastructure as required under AS2896-2021 Clause 7.4
- Labelled and identified all new cables for traceability
Outcome: A compliant alarm cabling network ready for panel integration.
Stage 2 — Manifold Hardware Upgrade
Clause 6.5- Removed existing manifold arms
- Installed new arms with upgraded contents gauges and pressure switches
- Performed mechanical checks, leak tests and calibration verification
- Confirmed compliance with AS2896-2021 Clause 6.5 — Manifold Requirements
Outcome: Modernised manifolds capable of accurate low cylinder pressure and reliable compliant alarm signalling.
Stage 3 — Alarm Connection, Programming & Commissioning
Clause 8.2- Connected new cabling at all manifold switches and contents gauges
- Connected corresponding feeds at the ASCON Master Alarm Panel
- Programmed alarm to include new inputs
- Tested alarms for low contents, low pressure and changeover conditions
- Verified correct annunciation, alarm priority and system reset responses
- Completed documentation in accordance with AS2896-2021 Clause 8.2
Outcome: A fully integrated, compliant alarm system providing real-time monitoring across all three medical centres.
